Andrey Rublev he qualified for his first final at the Mutua Madrid Open 2024 after defeating Taylor Fritz in a very balanced match, but in which the Russian was able to better manage the key and pressure moments. The Russian thus enters the final act of the Madrid tournament after days of great tennis, in which he rediscovered his aggressive and dominant game.
On a sunny day, the first two semi-finalists of the Mutua Madrid Open took to the court on the Manolo Santana center court. However, neither of the two tennis players was among those who people had predicted. Taylor Fritz and Andrey Rublev were in fact two of the biggest surprises of this edition, together with the other two semi-finalists: Jiri Lehecka e Auger-Aliassime.
Perhaps the two tennis players were also taken by surprise by their appearance in the semifinals, despite both being winners of a Masters 1000 (Fritz at Indian Wells 2022 and Rublev at Monte Carlo 2023) and having already faced each other in the semifinals of a Masters 1000. But not it seemed that way, because they looked tense and nervous at the beginning of the match, surrendering their respective serves in the first two games.
The pace of the match was short but intense, with two bombers who preferred to dunk the ball rather than attempt any exchange. Both relied on their big serves after those first two games, and neither could do any harm in return.
This is how the first set developed, with no surprises on serve or return. Until the crucial moment came, with Rublev leading 5-4 and Fritz serving. The Russian changed pace, entered the pitch and took control of the exchange, surprising Fritz who was unable to react. Rublev screamed with joy, freeing himself of the pressure after winning a balanced first set with few opportunities: 6-4 in 40 minutes.
The fact that Rublev won the first point of the chess match they were both playing did not alter the tennis of either of them. Everything remained the same as most of the first set. Solidity in service, few return opportunities and few exchanges.
However, in the second set Rublev didn’t wait for the end to put Fritz in difficulty. He anticipated a couple of games and surprised the American again who, as in the first set, did not react and gave up serve, allowing the Russian to take the lead 4-2.
Fritz smiled at the way he lost serve, after a passer on Rublev’s line, and for falling again into the trap of the Russian who raised the pace at the right time. The American was no longer able to respond and surrendered to Andrey who showed himself to be very solid and, above all, safe from start to finish.
The Russian thus gains access to the final of the Mutua Madrid Open for the first time and, after a turbulent start to the clay season, returns to show his incisive and explosive tennis.
