Masatoshi Sakurai secures first career victory in QMLB

BASEBALL. Masatoshi Sakurai won his first career victory in the Quebec Major Baseball League (QMLB) on Friday evening at the Léo-Asselin stadium in Acton Vale.

Thanks to a sparkling performance, the Japanese left-handed pitcher helped Brock Nutrite Lambert win 8-1 over Coaticook’s Big Bill.

The Drummondvillois took a 3-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run double from Samuel Guilbert and a single from Samuel Nadeau. The latter produced two more runs with a double in the fourth inning. His teammates Tom Guilbert and Alexandre Clavette then hit consecutive singles, putting the game out of Big Bill’s reach.

The visitors scored their one and only run on a passed ball in the fourth inning.

This point from Big Bill is not deserved by starter Masatoshi Sakurai. In six innings of work, the 27-year-old Japanese allowed only four hits, striking out nine. Thanks to this solid performance, the left-hander lowered his earned run average to 1.91.

Veteran Pierre-Luc Joly came in to pitch in the seventh inning, ending the game with a strikeout.

The Brock (2-2) will visit the Shawinigan Cascades (1-4) on Sunday, starting at 2 p.m.
