Now that we know that Atlanta will draft first next June, almost everyone agrees that the franchise will set its sights on Frenchman Alexandre Sarr. Former player of the franchise, Lou Williams, however, made a big rant on the subject recently, on behalf of all the city’s fans…
Ending your season at the Play-In and inheriting the first pick of the draft is possible. Proof by being the 2023-24 Hawks, since they were the big winners of the lottery after a very moribund regular campaign (36 victories for 46 defeats, tenth in the Eastern Conference). But who will be the lucky one in a few weeks? Given his profile, Alexandre Sarr currently emerges as the favorite.
But if the franchise could thus acquire a big talent, it remains to be seen whether this would allow it to escape the mediocrity in which it has been stuck for years. For a lot of fans but also Lou Williams, this would not be the case with the Frenchman… or anyone else from the 2024 vintage for that matter. Atlanta Hawks fans are furious about having the first pick. “In one of the lowest projected drafts, we have the first pick.” That’s the joke going around town right now. I think the feeling in the city is to trade this pick and turn it into a few veterans that we can bring in to build things around Trae Young or Dejounte Murray.

Atlanta does not want to rebuild. They don’t want young talent right now. They want to mix with Indiana, the Knicks and all these teams that are coming up and have all-star caliber and superstar caliber players, like Trae Young or Dejounte Murray, who both participated at the All-Star Games.
This city doesn’t want young talent right now. People want to trade that draft pick, and they want to get guys who can come here and help win right now.
Strong words from the former sixth man who therefore speaks on behalf of the entire city of Atlanta… according to his words at least. Because on the fans’ side, everyone is far from validating Lou-Will’s words:

Alexandre Sarr could well land at the Hawks in a few weeks, but Lou Williams says local fans are frustrated with this situation. Which will not prevent the leaders from taking over the Frenchman, if they really want to.
