Lorenzo Rigano Wins Bronze Medal for Italy at Judo World Championships

Bronze medal for Lorenzo Rigano from Santa Teresa with the colors of Italy at the Judo World Championships in Abu Dhabi. The latest victory for the Italian national team came on the final day of the world championship competition. In the team competition the six Italian judokas, including Rigano (cat -90kg), defeated their tough opponents from Uzbekistan 4 to 2.

Italy’s path was difficult and after overcoming the Dutch 4 to 3, thanks to the decisive point (ironically) by the Italian-Dutch Kim Polling, they had to succumb to the French. In the repechage, the Azzurri won 4-0 against the Hungarians, which allowed Italy to play for the medal in the final for third place against Uzbekistan. With the score 3 to 1, the first opportunity to close the match fell to Lorenzo Rigano. After a waza-ari for uchi mata which was taken away from the blue, the judoka originally from S.Teresa di Riva was forced to give in at the third shido and for hansoku make in just over 30 seconds. Asya Tavano then took care of setting the final score at 4 to 2 and giving Italy the bronze medal.

World Championships to forget for the other two judokas from Messina. The other Santaresi native Elios Manzi (-66kg) and the Furcese Angelo Pantano (-60kg) were immediately eliminated and were unable to return even to the repechage. Manzi, victorious in the first match against the Slovak Matej Polak, was defeated by the other Mongolian Baskhuu Yondonperenlei. A setback after the bronze medal won at the last European Championships in Zagreb, also in view of qualifying for the Paris Olympics. But he still hopes to get the points needed to gain the pass to five circles.
