Local Tennis Teams from Düren Compete in Tennis Regional League

This summer season, two tennis teams from the Düren city area are allowed to compete in the Tennis Regional League, the highest German league in their respective age groups. The regional league is not new territory for the men’s 70 team of the Düren gymnastics club. This is the fourth time they have competed in this league.

Both the men’s 60s and the 65s and 70s continued to decline. This time, staying in the league should be achieved in the fourth attempt. The chances of this are perhaps better than ever before, as Philipp Sattler, number three for Düren, reports: “Our goal is to stay in the class for the first time. The prerequisite is that we remain physically healthy in our old age. With Mechernich and Oedt we have two matches that are open in terms of the constellation.” The older men are fighting hard for this and are training twice a week in addition to the Meden Games. At the end of June, the men’s 70 team wants to celebrate staying in the league after the last game in Oedt.

For the men’s 60 team of TG Rot-Weiß Düren, staying in the league is utopian. “We see ourselves as outsiders. Getting a win would be a sensation. The class is incredibly strong,” reports team captain Heinrich Göbbels. While RW Düren operates with local forces, there are international players on the entry list for every opponent. Rot-Weiß Hangelar, for example, features the Swede Anders Jarryd, who lost to Boris Becker in the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 1985, and the Brit Jeremy Bates, the current singles world champion in the men’s 60 class.

During their second trip to the regional league, the Düren team was aware that they can – or must – compete against such international greats. You worked for this “adventure” in the preseason. In the Oberliga they won all games, the decisive game against Blau-Weiß Aachen 5:4. Herbert Hallmann’s doubles with Göbbels, who had been unbeaten for seven years, won the decisive point. Last Saturday in the first match of the summer season they also lost 7-2 to Blau-Weiß Issum. Hallmanns and Peter Mohrdieck took the two points through individual victories. The DTV celebrated its season opener on Wednesday at home against the reigning German champions from Bad Oeynhausen.
