Libeer Aims for Bronze at Judo Grand Slam, Willems, Chouchi, and Nikiforov to Compete Next

Libeer, 29th in the world, won his first two fights on penalties, in the first round against Altantsetseg Batsukh (IJF 39), who plays for the United Arab Emirates, by golden score, and in the second round against the Russian Irina Zueva. In both cases, his opponents received three ‘shidos’. Libeer was beaten in the quarterfinals by Frenchwoman Sarah Léonie Cysique (IJF 7), who scored an ippon after 1:49.

In the repechage, Libeer won against the Chinese Qi Cai (IJF 17) thanks to a waza-ari. She will meet Mongolian Enkhriilen Lkhagvatogoo (IJF 16) in the fight for bronze. Lkhagvatogoo beat Libeer in their only previous fight, in 2021 in Abu Dhabi.

Libeer, 26, will be aiming for a fourth medal in a Grand Slam after reaching the third step of the podium in Paris (2021), Baku (2021) and Tel Aviv (2023).

Amber Ryheul (IJF 28) was eliminated in the second round in -52 kg. Ryheul started with an ippon victory over Spaniard Marina Castello Diez (IJF 68) after 1:27 of combat. She then lost on waza-ari against Azerbaijani Gultaj Mammadaliyeva (IJF 17).

Loïs Petit (IJF 48) was immediately eliminated in -48 kg, beaten in the first round by an ippon from the Vietnamese Thi Tinh Hoang (IJF 155).

Gabriella Willems will compete in the -70 kg tournament on Saturday. Sami Chouchi (-90 kg) and Toma Nikiforov (-100 kg) will enter action on Sunday.
