Legal Victory: Premier League Players Win Fight Against UNFP over Image Rights

Revelation of the Premier League this season, it was not on the football field that Jérémy Doku made headlines yesterday. The former Rennes player (2020-2023), as well as three other players, won their legal battle following litigation against the UNFP. The players accused the players’ union of an attack on their image rights. For them, the UNFP lacked transparency in the use of funds reported by Panini, but also opposed their collective image being used without compensation.

Jérémy Doku, current Manchester United player, Jérémy Pied (French champion with Lille in 2021), Bruno Ecuele Manga (Niort defender and former Lorient player) and Vincent Bessat (ex-Nantes and Caen player), believe that the UNFP is not legitimate to use and market their image. Justice ruled in their favor yesterday and ruled that the UNFP did not provide proof that its commercial subsidiary, linked by a contract with the Panini company, held the rights to the players’ images. “The amounts of damages that we must pay are extremely low since the players claimed hundreds of thousands of euros and these sums ultimately amount to 6,500 euros in total, or between 1,000 and 2,000 per player”indicated Emmanuel Ronco, lawyer of the UNFP, to l’AFP.
