Lajovic wins in the middle of the night in the third set

Lorenzo Sonego’s Rome Internationals end immediately. The blue tennis player surrenders to Dusan Lajovic in the first round of the Italian tournament, with a 6-3 6-7 6-3 matured in two and a half hours of match. Very complicated first hour, in which the blue suffers a lot but manages to put it in balance, only to pay for a moment of down in the crucial phase of the third fraction.

Sonego confirms at the start that he is not the best version of himself, but on the other side there is also a Lajovic who, on his best days, can create a lot of problems. There are also a couple of measurement errors by the Italian and the Serbian immediately flies to 3-0. There doesn’t seem to be any hope until the world number 64 commits a double fault which leads him to defend a break point, canceled out with a nice volley.

Today Lajovic seems to be having a good day, and he proves it again in the third game in which Sonego can blame himself for very little. Winning response, a forehand and a backhand down the line to skin your hands and the Serbian flies away comfortably at 3-1. But Lorenzo doesn’t give up, he holds the next serve and mentally stays on the court. Here comes the meltdown of the Serbian, who after a heavenly hour makes two really bad mistakes, and the blue man manages to put his face forward after a seventh game with strong palpitations. The tug-of-war continues until the tiebreak, with Lorenzo not taking advantage of two break points and then canceling one in the eleventh game, but the Serbian gives the first minibreak with a forehand in the corridor while the Italian takes the second with an exchange very hard. Lorenzo flies 6-2 and closes the fourth ball of the set with an ace.

The third set begins with a substantial balance in the first games, with the rounds of service flowing smoothly. The one who is starting to appear more uncertain is Lajovic, who no longer has the confidence of the first hour of the match and begins to make a few too many mistakes, getting away with it in both the fifth and seventh games. Lorenzo, however, begins to feel fatigue, asking for the masseur’s intervention and the Serbian jumps on the blue’s head, with three points of great substance and going to serve for the set. An almost perfect game was enough for him, closing with the inside out forehand.

In a match in which both make more mistakes than they achieve (12-26 the balance of winners-unforced errors by Lajovic, 18-25 by the blue), Sonego pays a low percentage of firsts, 61%, with only 46% of rallies won with the second, offering eight break points to his opponent. Which saves four of the five opportunities offered to Lorenzo. Who can’t get out of the shadow of this 2024.
