La Rioja to Host Paralympic Relay Sports Weekend for Athletes with Disabilities

LOGROÑO, 14 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

This coming weekend La Rioja will become the main protagonist of sports for people with disabilities. Paralympic Relay, a project that the Spanish Paralympic Committee develops in this Autonomous Community with the sponsorship of Cidacos, organizes days dedicated to sports nutrition and badminton, which will take place in Logroño and Lardero.

All of this will begin on Friday at the Ibercaja Foundation in the capital of Rioja with a day dedicated to the importance of nutrition in sports. In the first part, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., there will be 3 talks given by two nutritionists (Alba Velázquez, ENforma Clinic; Lorena Aira, Spanish Paralympic Committee; and Alberto Gutiérrez, AG Nutrition), who will give keys on how Nutrition must be taken care of in high-level sports, with topics such as ‘Nutrition pre, during and post training’, ‘Feed your performance: mastering the 4Rs of recovery’ and ‘Nutrition and injuries’.

Finally, athletes attending the event will have a question and answer session to resolve all their doubts. Admission will be free until capacity is reached.

In the second part of this opening day (from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) a cooking workshop will be held, carried out by ‘Cooking blindly’, a group formed by a group of people with visual disabilities whose main chef is Angel Palacios. This is aimed at athletes from the La Rioja Paralympic Relay and athletes with disabilities as a whole and prior registration will be required through the following link: https://forms.office.com/e/dcpGnucQbF?origin=lprLink.

In the workshop, a sports recipe prepared by the CPE nutritionist, Lorena Aira, will be cooked. On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a day dedicated to Paralympic badminton will be held at the CEIP Eduardo González Gallarza Sports Center in Lardero. The great objective will be to bring and introduce all those people with disabilities who want it to this sport.

The activity is aimed at people with intellectual and physical disabilities, cerebral palsy and acquired brain damage and their companions, coaches, technicians and badminton athletes. Those registered who are minors must be accompanied by their father, mother or guardian.

During the day, there will be specific training in Paralympic badminton and an experience table with athletes such as Álex Santamaría, best Riojan athlete of 2023, and an introduction to the sport. Registration is free and it will be essential to complete it through this questionnaire: https://forms.office.com/e/3UpKLhgYfq. Registration includes sports accident insurance and the organization has sports wheelchairs for those who need it.

The Paralympic Relay project is carried out at the regional level, in coordination with the Territorial Multi-Sports and Single-Sports Federations, and is focused on the first stages of sports development.

The program consists of locating and recruiting young people with disabilities to introduce them to sports with the aim of turning them into future elite Paralympic athletes, developing in parallel an inclusive structure between the clubs and sports entities of the Autonomous Community, in this case in La Rioja, which allows the continuous development of future athletes over the years.
