Jonas Hector Criticizes 1. FC Cologne’s Approach in Last Weekend’s Loss to Heidenheim

1. FC Cologne lost 4-1 in Heidenheim last weekend and remained far from having a chance of making it into the relegation round. The approach left former player Jonas Hector confused.

Jonas Hector also had very little hope left. It was “not surprising” that 1. FC Köln was stuck in the bottom of the Bundesliga table this season and ended up being relegated to the 2nd league for the first time since 2018. “It was already foreseeable that it would be very difficult,” says Hector in his podcast Hit and you’re done.

The ex-captain and former national player himself ended his career at FC last summer – and is now taking a critical look at his ex-colleagues’ approach to the last game.

Hector would have liked more risk

At 1. FC Heidenheim (4:1), the billy goats would have had the opportunity to advance to the relegation games against Fortuna Düsseldorf with a clear win on the last match day – assuming Union Berlin had lost against SC Freiburg at the same time. But this chance was quickly out of reach for FC coach Timo Schultz’s team.

Hector found it “frustrating,” summing up the feeling surrounding FC’s relegation: “The hope that had flared up in the city over the past week was dashed relatively quickly.” Hector counts the duel in Heidenheim, just like the one with Darmstadt 98 (0:2), as one of Cologne’s worst performances of the season.

The pressure may have been too great; Hector had seen a “blocked” team on the pitch. Which may have been due to Cologne’s basic match plan. “I had the feeling in both games that we were taking a wait-and-see approach,” criticizes Hector and explains: “As a fan, I would have liked it to be on fire right from the start, for everything to get started. You have to play to win, everything or anything nothing.” But he didn’t have that feeling in the first half hour.
