Joel Schwärzler Advances to Quarter-Finals at Challenger in Mauthausen

Joel Schwärzler makes it to the quarter-finals at the Challenger in Mauthausen. He beat the Spaniard Martin Landaluce in two sets 6:4 and 6:2.

The 18-year-old acts confidently in the duel for long stretches. In the first set he didn’t let anything go wrong with his own serve; the break to make it 1-0 was enough to win the set.

In the second set he immediately moved ahead to 4:1, and Schwärzler even allowed himself a break to make it 2:4. After a playing time of 1:18 hours he uses the third match point.

Now Schwärzler will face the Bulgarian Dimitar Kuzmanov, who beat Lukas Neumayer on Thursday afternoon (match report). Schwärzler, currently in 743rd place in the ATP rankings, can celebrate twice on Thursday.

In the double quarter-finals, Vorarlberg and Neil Oberleitner defeated the Brazilian duo Orlando Luz/Fernando Romboli 6:4, 6:4.

In addition, Gerald Melzer is the third ÖTV player to book a ticket for the individual quarter-finals. He defeated the tournament’s number two, Roman Andres Burruchaga from Argentina, 6:4 and 6:4. The 33-year-old will face Slovakian Jozef Kovalik in the quarterfinals.
