JJ Redick: A Potential Candidate to Replace Darvin Ham as the Lakers Head Coach

If we are to believe the latest rumors coming from Los Angeles, coach Darvin Ham should not stay on the Lakers bench for very long. But who will be able to replace him? Several names have already leaked, including that of JJ Redick.

Former NBA sniper and now recognizable through his podcasts and appearances on ESPN as a commentator (with Mike Breen and Doris Burke), JJ Redick is increasingly considered a serious candidate to become head coach in the NBA. We have already heard his name for the position of the Hornets, with whom he has already interviewed, or that of the Raptors a year ago when Toronto was looking for a replacement for Nick Nurse.

From now on, it is on the Los Angeles side that JJ Redick is mentioned, with a few others.

“JJ (Redick) is a real candidate if the Lakers are indeed looking for a new coach. But there are a half-dozen potential candidates, including Clippers coach Tyronn Lue.” – David McMenamin, Lakers insider for ESPN

If the candidacy of JJ Redick is also intriguing, it is in particular because the latter has become very seriously close to LeBron James recently, the two playing together on their new podcast “Mind the Game”, focused on the technical-tactical aspect of basketball. Some, like former NBA player Rashad McCants, outright believe that LeBron teamed up with JJ in order to “train to be the next coach of the Lakers”.

If all this can be held in theory, in practice it is a little difficult to imagine the Lakers hiring JJ Redick, who has no experience as a coach other than coaching the team where his 9-year-old son plays.

If the basketball IQ of the former elite shooter is undeniable, if he is respected by most NBA players, being coach of the Lakers is perhaps the hardest job in the entire League. The margin for error is very small, the pressure is immense, and it takes more than expertise in X and O’s to be able to take on such a job. Maybe JJ Redick will prove that he is capable of being this kind of coach in the future, but in the meantime the Lakers will probably rely on a more experienced coach.

According to the sources of The Athletic, Darvin Ham should officially be fired in the coming days. We will see from then on whether JJ Redick’s candidacy should really be taken seriously.
