Jasson Domínguez begins his rehabilitation with the Yankees

“The Martian” is back.

Healthy again, Dominican Jasson Domínguez returned to the field for the first time since last September.

He 32nd best prospect of the Majors singled to right field off the first pitch he saw off former Yankees starter and also Dominican Domingo Germán – a four-seam fastball at 90.9 miles per hour. Dominguez finished the day going 1-for-3 with a walk to begin a rehab assignment for Class-A Tampa.

“It feels good to be back on the field doing what I love,” said the gunner. “It feels good”.

Dominguez’s rise down the stretch last year was one of the Yankees’ bright spots in 2023. He began his major league career by hitting four home runs in eight games before undergoing Tommy John surgery in September.

Due to the nature of his injury, the plan for Dominguez is to serve as the designated hitter for the first two weeks of his assignment. In addition to the game action, the man from Dominican Republic is shooting from a distance of 150 feet.

“Everything is going according to plan,” Domínguez explained. “I was anxious about when he would return. But now that I’m playing, I’m fine.”

Now the question is, where would Domínguez fit in with the Yankees? The rehabilitation assignment is limited to 20 days. After that, Domígunez will have to return to the big team roster or be optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

New York’s roster looks very different from that September. Domínguez would not be taking over Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Alex Verdugo or Giancarlo Stanton, so a move to the minors seems more likely now.

“It’s a tough decision we’re going to have to make at that point, because good things are happening here,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said last weekend. “We’ll talk about that when the time comes.”
