Jason Kidd Extends Contract with Dallas Mavericks

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd signed an extension to his contract on Monday to continue leading the team.

The Mavericks announced the extension a day before starting their second-round series in the Western Conference at the home of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Dallas advanced last week by eliminating the Los Angeles Clippers in six games.

Hall of Famer Kidd, who won an NBA championship as a Mavericks player in 2011, is in his third season as Dallas coach. He led the Mavericks to the Southwest Division title with a 50-32 record, his second 50-win season with the team.

The Mavericks did not disclose the extent of the contract extension.

The extension was closed just when Kidd, 51, was seen as a possible candidate to fill the vacancy on the Los Angeles Lakers, where he previously served as an assistant.

“We are excited to have Coach Kidd leading our team for years to come with this well-earned contract extension,” Mavericks majority owner Patrick Dumont said in a statement released by the team. “Kidd has led our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons, and we are excited to have his leadership to continue supporting this great franchise.”

In their first season, the Mavericks went 52-30 and reached the Western Conference finals, losing in five games to Golden State. Overall, Kidd is 140-106 as Dallas’ coach, plus 323-296 in his career with stints in Brooklyn and Milwaukee.

“Jason brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his role that cannot be emulated,” said general manager Nico Harrison. “He has earned the trust and respect of our players, as well as others throughout the league.”
