ITI completes the creation of the European Federation to accelerate the adoption of the data economy |

The Valencian technology center ITI culminates the creation of the European Federation to accelerate the adoption of the data economy. Technological convergence, standardization, awareness and experimentation are the fundamental pillars for the data economy to take hold in Europe and generate the expected benefits.

The main innovation and research centers in data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Europe have come together to create the Federation of i-Spaces, positioned in the aspects of experimentation and awareness, thus covering a strategic role in this great project for Europe in the next ten years (the Digital Decade).

This culminates a process led by ITI, a private technology center specialized in ICT, which together with the Big Data Value Association (BDVA), which was designed more than 5 years ago with the aim of creating an integrated and orchestrated network of innovation with data that worked together to become the reference in Europe for experimentation and Innovation with Data and Artificial Intelligence.

With this objective, and after more than a year of project design, in September 2020, EUHubs4Data began, financed by the European Commission and coordinated by ITI, which has been the vehicle that has allowed us to establish the bases to create the federation of Big Data Innovation Hubs to facilitate experimentation by SMEs from different countries, as well as contribute to the creation of common European data spaces and help companies in their digitalization processes.

Specifically, the project has carried out 42 experiments developed by 21 partners from 12 different countries and numerous success stories. Likewise, the Final Review of the project focused on the main achievement of EUHubs4Data: the creation of the new Federation of i-Spaces.

The i-Spaces Federation takes over the EUHubs4Data project and is therefore born as the main reference for experimentation with all types of data and AI technologies in Europe, following the values and principles at the regional, national and European level. It is an alliance of independent legal entities that has three main actors: 30 i-Spaces, among which is ITI, BDVA as a Federative Entity and a Data Intermediary Entity.

“A network of i-Spaces has been created, regulated by a common governance framework, which provides European coverage and which coordinates and shares its offer of quality services aimed at SMEs and start-ups, creating a secure and federated environment for experimentation and innovation, in accordance with European regulation. It represents the gateway for regional and national actors to the main Big Data and AI initiatives,” says Daniel Sáez, director of Strategic Intelligence and Transfer at ITI and president of Gaia-X Spain.

BDVA will be the federal entity and receives the assets generated in the EUHubs4Data project for exploitation. For its part, and in accordance with the requirements of the Data Governance Act, this federative entity must be complemented by a legally separate entity for data sharing and that is the Data Intermediary Entity, which houses the catalog of shared data of the federation.
