After fifth place in the general medal table and first place in the women’s individual medal table, here is the last medal that completes the Italian masterpiece at the Abu Dhabi World Championships: the bronze in the mixed team competition won against Uzbekistan. The team (made up of Capanni, Polling, Pedrotti; Tavano, Simonetti, Esposito G., Parlati M., Parlati C., Rigano, Pirelli and Mungai), already on the third step of the podium at the European Championships, thus obtains an excellent calling card for Paris. Italy closes the world event with 4 medals: 1 gold with Odette Giuffrida, 2 silvers with Assunta Scutto and Alice Bellandi, 1 bronze with the mixed-team.

The Italian mixed-team began its world journey against the Netherlands, the country that Kim Polling left after recently acquiring an Italian passport (she lives in Turin and is married to Andrea Regis) which allowed her to compete for Italy . Fate, as is well known, is blind and not only pitted Italy and Holland against each other in the first round, but also wanted to twist the knife in the wound: after the 3-3, with the blue points of Polling, Capanni and Giovanni Esposito, for the play-off the 70 kg was drawn for the play-off which thus put everything in the hands of Kim, victorious over his former national teammate Hilde Jager. The two gave a truly emotional moment complete with hugs and tears. France, however, was too strong, despite the blue pride of Thaunany Capanni who forced Priscilla Gneto to shido. In the repechage, Italy overwhelmed Hungary with Simonetti, Pirelli, Capanni and Manuel Parlati. The final for the bronze against Uzbekistan was anything but simple, but Italy managed to prevail with determination. Capanni placed two wazari on Keldiyorova, followed by Giovanni Esposito who found the winning ouchi gari (wazari) on Ahadov, then Pedrotti’s success on Matnyazova, Rigano’s disqualification against Sharofiddin Boltaboev and Asya Tavano’s decisive victory on Rinata Ilmatova.

“Our Azzurri were all very good – commented Laura Di Toma, technical director of the Italian national team -. The girls in particular demonstrated the great work done. But this third place as a team, with the young people who were ready and will be even more ready in the next four years, was exciting. I give a special round of applause to Kim. It was very difficult for her, we all understood it, but on her tatami she was a great athlete. And Mungai, the captain, was also very good, always knowing how to speak at the right time and in the right way, keeping the team at the top.”
