The Italian Football Federation (Federcalcio) has issued a statement this Friday in which it withdraws the anti-Super League measures that it promoted in May 2021 for which it threatened all teams that participated in non-recognized private competitions with expulsion from Serie A. by UEFA. In the Federcalcio statement, reference is made to the ruling last December by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), a ruling that is beginning to have effects on European football. In the case of Spain, the RFEF did not issue rules contrary to participation in the Super League, so it has not had to rectify as Italy has done now.

England, which left the European Union, also threatened its clubs if they participated in the Super League, but the CJEU ruling is clear: UEFA does not have the legal capacity to block the new competition, so the Super League could include the English clubs that, in the first instance, also signed the project contract, which is still in force. Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal are waiting to reactivate their participation.

The Super League was a response from its promoters to the new Champions League system that, for example, ends the formula of first-leg matches in the group stage. The new tournament has a format with three league divisions, 64 participating teams and promotions and relegations every season since its start, which is scheduled for September 2025.
