Italian Athletes Shine at International Karate Competition in Spain

3000 athletes representing 75 Nations reached the Spanish city bathed by the Atlantic Ocean to compete from 15 to 19 May.

The Karate Club Savona brought a delegation of 15 athletes all in the Kumite fighting specialty led by coaches Raffaella Carlini and Corrado Buscaglia.

On Sunday two extraordinary medals came from the Under 14s where Giacomo Ferraris won the gold medal in the -45kg by winning 5 matches with 31 points, confirming himself, after the silver medal in the first stage in Dubai, as one of the best athletes in the world in the its category.

In the women’s -52kg Maya Marenco (already fifth in Dubai) wins all the matches and only loses the final to the Belgian Poskin in an incredible way: ahead 3-1 with the match practically over, she suffers a comeback at the last tenth of a second which sees her give up 4 -3 and win silver.

Great fifth place for Gian Lorenzo Pica in a very difficult category like that of Junior -68kg where he won 4 matches including the derby against the reigning Italian Junior Champion of the category Korotenko.

Andrea Odello won 3 matches in the Junior -68kg and Matteo Mondo Branchi in the Cadets -52kg.

A match also won for Vittoria Galati in the women’s Under 14 -47kg.

Gabriele Braja in the Under 21s, Micol Genta and Matilde Fiume in the Juniors, Silvia Catona, Roberta Musso, Jacopo Genta and Saimon Domi in the Cadets, Arianna Campo and Libertad Herrero in the Under 14s participated in less successful races but demonstrated that they can be competitive at the highest levels. .

Italy, also thanks to the Savonese medals, finishes first in the medal table of the competition ahead of Egypt and Spain.

The next stop will be in Croatia, in Porec, at the end of June.
