INTI’s Nutritious Gluten-Free Foods to Support Argentinian Celiac Community

In Argentina, it is estimated that one in every hundred people may suffer from celiac disease, food intolerance to gluten. Since correct nutrition is the basis of its treatment, INTI developed safe and nutritious foods that are now available to the celiac community.

In order to raise awareness among the population about people who have this disease, May 5 has been established as International Celiac Day.

On that day, in recent years, different meetings, congresses and meetings have been held in Argentina in order to provide more information to celiac patients and their families, and to join forces between the government and the community to improve the quality of life of people. people who have this disease.

This year, the first CELIARED meeting was held in the province of Buenos Aires to establish in its territory a single database and analysis of the celiac population, integrating four regions in this first stage, to advance during 2013 on the entire province. .

For its part, the INTI–Cereals and Oilseeds Center continues to advise different companies in the sector at the national level to produce gluten-free foods. This commitment acquired with the celiac community aims at the research, development and transfer of products and processes without TACC, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that safe, nutritious food with optimal sensory characteristics reaches consumers.

Celiac disease is the most widespread genetic condition in the world. In Argentina, it is estimated that one in every hundred people has a permanent intolerance to gluten, a group of proteins present in wheat, oats, barley and rye (TACC) and products derived from these four cereals. Both children and adults can suffer from it and, currently, the incidence is higher in women than in men.

As a person with celiac disease must be treated for life with a rigorous TACC-free diet, the National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI), dependent on the Ministry of Industry, has developed raw materials, premixes and ready-to-prepare products, especially intended for this population, and that are already available on the market.
