Injury Woes for Soccer Stars: Vertonghen and Schmeichel Ruled Out, Euro Selection Still Possible

Brian Riemer gave bad news from the infirmary: Jan Vertonghen is, as expected, absent. The surprise comes from Kasper Schmeichel who will not play following an injury contracted against Bruges.

“There is no chance that Jan Vertonghen will play,” says Brian Riemer. We hoped and so did he but he won’t be ready. It’s a muscle injury and he hasn’t recovered enough to be on the field. Same for Kasper Schmeichel. He finished the match against Brugge injured and the tests showed that he was not capable of playing.”

However, the two men are still well on time to be part of their respective selections for the Euro which begins in three weeks.

Francis Amuzu is ill. “He couldn’t practice this Friday and it would take a miracle for him to play.” The rest of the team that was available against Bruges will be at Roel Clement’s disposal. Riemer’s assistant will be in charge given the coach’s suspension.

”That’s how it is, I took three yellows and it’s boring. The first one particularly bothers me because I was shouting something at Zeno (Debast) and the fourth referee thought I was shouting at him. I won’t change anything but we prepared for the match as well as possible.”

Will he be in the stands alongside Jesper Fredberg? The regulations prohibit him from any direct or indirect communication with the bench. “I haven’t looked at where I’ll be sitting yet but we’ll follow the rules so we don’t talk about that.”
