Indian Men’s Doubles Pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy Reach Final of Thailand Open 2024

Indian men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy sailed into the final of the Thailand Open 2024 badminton BWF Super 500 tournament at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok on Saturday.

Chirag and Satwik, third in the badminton rankings, eased past the world No. 80 duo of Ming Che Lu and Tang Kai Wei of Chinese Taipei in the semi-finals with a 21-11, 21-12 victory in 35 minutes.

This will be Chirag and Satwik’s fourth final of the year which includes the French Open, which they won in March. The Indian duo has previously played four BWF Super 500 finals, including at the 2019 Thailand Open, in their careers and have won them all.

The Asian Games champions took charge of the tie early and won the first game with ease. Ming Che Lu and Tang Kai Wei fought back at the start of the second game and led 10-8 at one stage.

However, the Indian badminton players proved too strong a challenge for the Chinese Taipei pair and won nine consecutive points to take control and seal the contest eventually.

In the final, the top-seeded Indian pair will be up against world No. 29 Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi of the People’s Republic of China who beat Kim Gi Jung and Kim Sa Rang of the Republic of Korea in the semi-finals.

In the women’s doubles semi-finals, India’s Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappaseeded fourth, suffered a straight-game defeat to top seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Pragjongjai of Thailand. The 21st-ranked Indian pair lost to their world No. 10 opponents 21-12, 22-20 in the 43-minute clash.

Crasto was decisive in saving three match points towards the closing stages of the second game. However, the Indian pair conceded two points from there and were unable to force a decider.
