Iga Świątek is in the quarter-finals in Rome

Former world number one Angelique Kerber missed a surprise against the currently world’s best tennis player despite a good performance. In the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Rome, the 36-year-old three-time Grand Slam winner lost to Polish favorite Iga Swiatek 5:7, 3:6.

Kerber, who had not lost a set in the first three rounds, was still able to claim the dress rehearsal for the French Open, which began on May 20th, as a success. Kerber only won three matches this year at the tournament in Indian Wells in March, where she was also eliminated in the round of 16.

Kerber also loses his third duel with Swiatek

In the third duel with Kerber, world number one Swiatek, who is 14 years younger and has already won the tournament in Rome twice, achieved his third victory. Kerber, whose best result in Rome was the 2012 semi-final, held up very well, especially in the first set, and was in strong form.

Coco Gauff also had to fight hard to reach the round of 16 in Rome. The reigning US Open champion ultimately beat Paula Badosa 5:7, 6:4 and 6:1.
