Ice Hockey World Cup: Germany starts the Ice Hockey World Cup with a victory

Vice world champion Germany won the first game at the Ice Hockey World Championships in the Czech Republic. National coach Harold Kreis’ team won against Slovakia 6:4 (0:0, 3:2, 3:2). The goals were scored by Dominik Kahun (30th minute), Jonas Müller (33rd), Lukas Kälble (40th), Marc Michaelis (45th), Leo Pföderl (57th) and Tobias Eder (59th).

This Saturday, the men’s ice hockey team will take on one of the title favorites in the second group game: the USA. The third preliminary round game against Sweden will take place on Monday. With the victory against direct rivals Slovakia, the German team took a step towards qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Just a few seconds after the start of the game in the Ostravar Aréna in the east of the Czech Republic, the German team had their first big chance. “It was a good start,” said Munich’s Yasin Ehliz during the first third break. Dominik Kahun scored the first goal (30th). Shortly afterwards, Jonas Müller scored (33′).

The Slovaks managed to equalize at one point, but 29 seconds before the end of the second period, Lukas Kälble (40th) scored the goal to make it 3-2. In the final section, Marc Michaelis (45th) extended the German lead. Despite the Slovakian offensive becoming stronger, Leo Pföderl (57th) and Tobias Eder (59th) ultimately scored the goals for victory.
