Hyundai Level Up: Basketball Clinic to Promote Personal Development in Puerto Rican Students

After holding a tournament in conjunction with Hyundai of Puerto Rico and the Department of Recreation and Sports (DRD), leader Nelson Colón already has the 24 boys and 24 girls who will participate on Saturday, June 8, in a basketball clinic as part of the “Hyundai Level Up” initiative.

The project aims to promote basketball as a tool for personal, physical and mental development to students in the country’s public schools. Students from multiple schools participated on April 25, 26 and 27 in a tournament in Aguas Buenas in order to be chosen to learn first-hand with the coach of the National Men’s Basketball Team.

But only 48 were selected, after a process that involved the statistics they recorded in the contest and information about the students provided by their teachers, according to Colón in a telephone interview with Primera Hora.

And although what happened in April was only the beginning of what is coming on June 8, the strategist admitted that he was impressed with the performance of the young people, between 13 and 15 years old, who attended the preliminary tournament.

“They showed good skills and talent. They were guys with projection, good height and attitude, seeking to define how they were going to be as basketball players… I really liked the ‘pace’, the way they played with a lot of energy. The boys came from their schools with a very good structure,” Colón said.

“It’s a matter of continuing to help them and follow up to get them on the path of how to try to structure them on and off the court,” he added.

Some of the students who were chosen for the basketball clinic, which will take place on the DRD court, were: Dayael Nolasco, Jan Miranda, Jhomar Meléndez, Joandier Rivera, Justin Agosto, Sebastián Serrano, Génesis Robles, Kamila González, Kamilezka González, Marielys Marrero, Nelián Camacho and Sofía Rosario.

The also mentor of the Vaqueros de Bayamón in the National Superior Basketball (BSN) indicated that the “Hyundai Level Up” clinic will begin at 8:00 am on Saturday, June 8, with breakfast and delivery of equipment, which will include t-shirts and towels. After the delivery, the clinics headed by Colón will begin. The event will end with a couple of matches between the students.

However, the National Team mentor will not be the only figure with experience in professional basketball who will be present. The leader of the Carolina Giants in the BSN and assistant of the Puerto Rican national team, Carlos González, will also be there; the coach of the women’s National Team, Jerry Batista; Vaqueros assistants Luis Camacho and Luis Cintrón; coach Raúl Sosa.

Likewise, Colón announced that reporter Natalia Meléndez will be giving the students a talk on projection and communication off the field.

“My goal is to provide them with an experience that helps them grow as students and as athletes. That is very important to me and is one of the main aspects of the project,” she said.
