The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, revealed the innovation at the Bangkok congress: «We intend to develop and improve the VAR, which has already been implemented by 65 Federations. More basic technology has been produced, with fewer cameras and without the need for match officials, so it will be more accessible to everyone. Coaches may request monitor review on two occasions. Players can ask the coach. If the initial decision is changed, they do not lose the request and there are still two slots left per meeting.”
THE CONTROVERSY
Who knows if the solution called by the coaches, or simply challenge, already used in various sports such as basketball, volleyball and tennis, could not be introduced together with the VAR in the future, eliminating various controversies on the pitch. The Lega Serie A had included it among the requests in a document, for example. Imagine if on Wednesday evening Allegri had been able to recall Maresca in place of the distracted Var Marini on the Hien-Vlahovic contact, a sacrosanct penalty not recognized in the control room. You can always do something more to improve a mechanism and not provide further motivation to those who want to dismantle it. There are countries, such as Sweden, which in protest have decided to no longer use VAR and others, such as England, which have called a vote to decide whether to continue along this line in the Premier League or go back, as announced by Wolverhampton: “The VAR has annihilated the emotion of the fans.” By involving the judged favorites in drawing up a verdict, therefore with a new approach, perhaps it would be different.
THE DEVELOPMENTS
In the meantime, the results will be evaluated with the interested parties and the next steps of the new “Video Support” will be discussed. There is no opportunity for leagues or competitions to request to be part of the trial at this time. The aim is to collect an initial series of experiences in order to refine the processes and the protocol. Following the coach’s request, a replay operator will ensure the correct footage is shown to the referee. Few people know it, but the new tool already exists in Italy too: «There is a similar experimentation in Futsal, or 5-a-side football. We are ready to apply all FIFA legislation – assures the president of the Hague, Carlo Peaceful – and therefore we are neither for nor against.
