Home Advantage: French Tennis Player Reflects on Nerves, Unconventional Plays, and ATP 250 Final

“How did you feel going into this half against Alexander Bublik?
I was still nervous at the start of the match. I’m playing at home, against an opponent stronger than me who has already beaten me (in Antwerp last year). There is my family, there is the public. I don’t have any expectations but you don’t want to do anything in this match. The most important thing is that I had a good match overall. Every match is different, if it happens tomorrow (Saturday) it will be the match of my life or I will be a little more nervous.

There was a game where Bublik chained serves with a spoon, rather successfully (the Kazakh was trailing 0-40 and saved his serve), how did you manage this delicate passage?
He’s a player who is a bit fanciful. He spoon-fed and frankly I didn’t expect it. Afterwards they were well touched, it was very well served on his part. It distracted me a little bit, I had a bad service game but the most important thing was how I pulled myself together after that. I managed to break it white directly. It was a passage where I had to refocus on myself, it’s not easy when an opponent does that.

You are going to play your first final, perhaps win your first title, what state of mind are you in?
Tomorrow’s match (the final) is going to be important. It’s a good step to win an ATP 250. I will do everything to win this match. I’m playing against Etcheverry, it’s the first time I’m going to play him. I’ve seen it on TV or YouTube before. I know he’s a very good player, an Argentinian, so I imagine he must like the land. I’m going to find weapons to hurt him.

“It’s nice to do this before Roland-Garros, it always gives a little more confidence”

This week is going really well for you…
This is where I grew up, I was born not far from here. For me, the week is going well. It’s an ideal week for me. I took things as they should, game by game. I didn’t put pressure on myself to achieve results. I said to myself: “Come on, you play Sonego (in the first round), give it a try, maybe there’s something to do.” It worked for me, I proved good things, it’s nice to do that before Roland-Garros, it always gives a little more confidence. »
