Three options for Leyma

To achieve promotion to the ACB League, Leyma has three options: win in Melilla, the defeat of San Pablo or the victory of Lleida

Previa

A historic day dawns for Leyma

The ACB has been waiting for Leyma since the beginning of the season. The highest category of Spanish basketball has been patient with the team from A Coruña, while others such as San Pablo and Estudiantes occupied first place. But the ACB knew that the moment would come, that there was a mutual feeling. And that Leyma would be a leader in his own right. And that moment occurred on February 18, after the victory against Betis (92-78), on matchday 21. A real crush. Or a bullet, from the point of view of the pursuers of the orange trail.

None of the official candidates to be the best team in the second division could catch up with the sensational team of the championship, which was breaking record after record (consecutive victories, points scored…), with a happy, offensive, and that he overwhelmed his rivals in just a quarter.

And at this meeting point, the league wanted the direct promotion to be settled as far from home as possible. As if to ward off those girls who fly over A Coruña sport in these types of situations and who have been hanging around in Marineda’s popular imagination for a few weeks. The rise of Dépor Abanca was a pike against bad omens. Those from Leyma and those from Deportivo’s first men’s team remain to be certified.

The intensity with which the city is experiencing these moments has established other milestones in the history of Galician basketball, with an influx of public to the stands of the Riazor Sports Palace never seen before. Two full houses and several games with over three thousand spectators give added value to the path that Leyma led by Diego Epifanio has taken, the best example of a team that pulls from its parish and, with it, feeds back a feeling of ACB.

Precisely, Alejandro Galán emphasized this aspect in an interview with La Voz: «It’s being incredible. I had never experienced anything like this in my seasons. “That the fans are so on top of the team is something that we have to value.”

The bloc’s commitment is beyond any doubt, and it is in adversity when Leyma becomes strong. The last ones, in the form of injuries. On the one hand, Diagne’s ankle. On the other, Olle Lundqvist’s arm. The efforts of the sports rehabilitation team and the players themselves resulted in Diagne not missing the last match against Castelló and Lundqvist traveling to Melilla without being completely ruled out for the most important event of the year.

In reality, the most important game in the history of the club (and in Galician basketball), as Leyma coach Diego Epifanio recalled before leaving: «We have been playing the most important game in the history of the club for a long time: the Cup, against San Pablo, in Oviedo… and, now, again. The good thing is that we were preparing for it.

However, as the visible face of the orange team at this time, he asked for sanity: “It is very important to maintain our routine, control our emotions and not do stupid things before Melilla.” For a coach who has already seen this, balance is the key to success.
