Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling launch game in Sony history, eclipsing God of War: Ragnarok. Helldivers 2 for PC and PlayStation 5 sold a whopping 12 million copies in its first 12 weeks of release, compared to the 11 million copies achieved in 10 weeks by God of War: Ragnarok in 2023.
As VGC reports, Sony admitted during a conference call on its financial results for the year ended March 31, 2024 that Helldivers 2 “exceeded expectations” and is part of a record year for its gaming division’s revenue.
Despite fewer PS5 sales, 2024 is a record year
The record year was achieved despite missing targets for the number of PS5 consoles sold, of which 20.8 million were shipped during the financial year. A decline in sales is expected for the period up to March 2025 as there will be “no major existing franchise titles” released in the next 12 months.
However, Helldivers 2’s continued success is good news for Sony, although the title endured a difficult few weeks following the controversial change requiring PC players to connect to a PSN account. Sony eventually reversed this decision, but only after other Sony titles also came under fire as a result of this news. However, Helldivers 2 remains unavailable to new players in most countries where PSN is not accessible.
Helldivers 2 hype just won’t let up
A response from Steam appears to confirm that it was Sony’s decision to delist Helldivers 2 in some countries, showing that the battle against mandatory PSN connection may be won but is far from over.
Still, according to SteamDB, Helldivers 2 saw a 24-hour peak of over 95,000 players on Steam in the last 24 hours, although this is well below the peak of over 450,000 reached three months ago.
However, these numbers do not include players on PlayStation, so the number of concurrent players is likely significantly higher.
