Hein Vanhaezebrouck Departs La Gantoise: A Look Back at His Impact and Legacy

The departure of Hein Vanhaezebrouck had been in the air for several weeks already. By mutual agreement, the coach and the Buffalo”s decided not to renew their collaboration. Their separation was done “on the best terms, with mutual respect and with enormous thanks for what was accomplished together,” assures the club.

“The entire club is incredibly grateful for the dedication and passion that Hein has always shown,” comments La Gantoise. “His name is forever engraved in the history of our club, will always be associated with La Gantoise and will remain in the hearts of our supporters.”

The coach will have coached the players there during a total of 371 official matches. In addition to the 3.5 year period which has just ended, Hein Vanhaezebrouck had already passed through Ghent between 2014 and 2017, with a Belgian championship title during the 2014-2015 season and a campaign in the Belgian League. Champions the following season.

“My main goal has always been to make the fans happy. I would like to thank them and many other people in and around this club. My second spell at Ghent required a lot of energy from everyone, including understood to myself,” confided the coach. “During a period where a lot of things needed to be rectified and there was also Covid, we managed to qualify for the European cups every year and we won the Belgian Cup.”

As coach of the Buffalos, Hein Vanhaezebrouck received several individual awards: once Coach of the Year at the Sports Gala, once Coach of the Year at the Golden Shoe, twice the Raymond Goethals Trophy and once the Guy Thys Prize.

The club says, for its part, that it continues to work hard for the future and says it is “determined to build on the foundations of Hein with a new vision”. In the immediate future, however, the coach, players and management of La Gantoise will “concentrate 100%” on the play-off match and on winning a ticket to Europe, for the tenth consecutive season.
