Despite remaining in the league, the Heidelberg basketball players no longer employ their head coach. It is said that the ideas regarding the content of the collaboration are too far apart.

The MLP Academics Heidelberg are parting ways with Ingo Freyer and are repositioning themselves in the coaching position for the coming season. The basketball Bundesliga team announced this on Monday. “The content-related ideas of a long-term collaboration were too far apart on both sides,” explained Heidelberger’s managing partner, Matthias Lautenschläger. But people are “incredibly grateful” to Freyer for his work.

Seven wins in 19 games

The 53-year-old did a “fantastic job,” said sporting director Alex Vogel. “Relegation will always be closely linked to his name.” Freyer took over the Academics in January when they were in great sporting difficulty and ultimately saved them from the threat of relegation. In 19 games with the club he achieved seven wins. Heidelberg ended up third from last.
