The golf world is mourning the loss of the American Grayson Murray. The professional died at the age of just 30 – one day after he had withdrawn from a tournament. His teammates and the PGA reacted with great dismay.

The golf scene is mourning the loss of two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray. As the tour announced on its website, the American died on Saturday at the age of 30. Nothing was initially known about the background or cause of death. Grayson’s management also confirmed the news of his death, but declined to comment further.

The PGA Tour announced on its X-channel: “We were devastated to learn and are heartbroken to share that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning.”

“I’m at a loss for words,” said Jay Monahan of the PGA Tour. “We mourn Grayson and pray for his loved ones.” He also contacted Murray’s parents and expressed his deepest condolences. During the conversation, the parents also asked for the current tournament to be played to the end. Their son would have wanted that too. “As difficult as it will be, we will respect their wishes,” said Monahan.

Successful alcohol withdrawal and return to tour

Murray himself announced his withdrawal from the tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday. Colleagues also reacted with great dismay on social media. World number one Scottie Scheffler said: “I still can’t quite believe it. I’m thinking of his family and praying for them all.” Bubba Watson, two-time major winner, said: “Life is so fragile. At the Masters I hugged you and told you how proud I am of you. Thank you for letting me know you.”

The American had problems with alcohol for many years and suffered from depression, as he made public on social media. His career began promisingly: he became IMG Junior World Champion three times. In 2017, Murray then won the Barbasol Championships. He later reported that he played the tournament hungover for three days. “The best and worst thing that ever happened to me,” he said, “was my victory in my rookie year. I think the alcohol brought out a side of me that wasn’t me. In a way, it was the monster inside me.”

Murray later said, “I thought I was a failure. I thought I had a lot of talent, but this was just a waste of talent.” In 2023, he went through alcohol withdrawal and successfully returned to the PGA Tour in January – with a tournament win in Hawaii.
