The basketball player from Teramo passed away in Bologna due to illness. He was 86 years old, he was a star of Pellegrini’s D’Alessandro and for 15 years in Serie A with both Bolognese teams. He was a two-time Olympian and in 2011 president of Teramo basketball

TERAMO – A great loss has struck Teramo and international sport this night: Basketball has in fact lost Giusto Corrado Pellanera, who passed away at the Sant’Orsola hospital in Bologna at the age of 86.

Pellanera was one of the basketball players who marked the history of Italian basketball and not just Teramo. His career is full of successes, achieved with the Virtus Bologna shirt (10 seasons with 245 appearances) but more generally in Serie A for over 15 years between 1958 and 1973, also with the shirts of Saidero Udine and Fortitudo Bologna. In the national team he wore the blue shirt 107 times, scoring almost 600 points. And with Italy he took part in two Olympics, those in Tokyo (1964) and Mexico City (1968) and in the World Cup in Brazil (1963), Uruguay (1967) and in the European Championships in Poland (1963) and the Soviet Union ( 1965). He won the Mediterranean Games in 1963 in Npaoli and the first edition of the European Military Championships in Paris (1963).

As underlined by the Italian Basketball Federation, which expressed its condolences to the Pellanera family through its president Giovanni Petrucci, in his obituary, Pellanera was “one of the players who contributed to the affirmation of Italian basketball as a popular sport“. Because this sport also became popular in Teramo thanks to his exploits and those of the Savini College, then Libertas and finally the legendary D’Alessandro Teramo of the maestro Tino Pellegrini. In 2011 Teramo basketball called him to take on the role of president.
