Alaphilippe has plans

After 79 km, a small group around Alaphilippe broke away, which later grew to up to six riders. In this group: the Australian Lucas Plapp. The gap to the pursuers was up to two and a half minutes – a gap with which Plapp narrowly overtook overall leader Tadej Pogacar in the virtual overall standings.

But in the final phase, especially on the final climb, which was very steep at 20 percent, five kilometers from the finish, the peloton with leader Pogacar came close to the outliers again.

Lipowitz has to give up due to illness

Four riders were no longer able to take part in the sixth stage, including the ill German Bora Hansgrohe rider Florian Lipowitz. On the fifth stage, the young rider crossed the finish line one hour and eleven minutes behind.

On Friday, an individual time trial over 40.60 km from Foligno to Perugia awaits the riders.
