German Kata Athletes Shine at Last EJU Tournament Before European Championships

It was the last EJU kata tournament before the European Kata Championships in Sarajevo in mid-June. The German kata athletes were in top form and won a complete set of medals.

Tobias Meier and Jörg Schröder started with Kime no kata. With a convincing performance, they impressively demonstrated what “Kime – decision” means and were able to relegate the international competition to the next places and receive their first gold medal of their career after the final. “A strong performance from the two Freitalers,” praises DJB kata speaker Sebastian Frey.

Helene and Birgit Weinmann provided another wow effect in the Ju no kata. Both showed a very harmonious and finely accentuated kata, which was rewarded by the judges in the final round with the second best score of the day and gave the two Bavarians the silver medal. They were able to prevail particularly against the strong Spanish and Italian kata duos, who competed as medal candidates.

Jenny Frey and Sebastian Bergmann completed the medal set in the Kodokan Goshin justsu. Ultimately, the NRW duo was only half a point short of silver. Nevertheless, a great performance with which they continued their tournament win from Louvain-la-Neuve at the beginning of the year and were on a par with the reigning European and vice-European champions from Spain.

Now it’s time for all teams to prepare for the European Kata Championships on June 10th/11th. to get in the mood in Sarajevo to transfer the successful series from this competition year to the European Championships.

The DJB is also pleased that the EJU Kata Commission has nominated our judges Birgit Andruhn and Sebastian Frey for the Kata European Championships based on their achievements and the associated EJU Kata Judges Ranking.
