Judo World Cup: Wagner and Böhm fight for title and ticket
The World Championships in Abu Dhabi are already focused on the Olympics.

A good two months before the Olympic Games, the German judoka are fighting for World Cup medals and the last tickets for Paris. Just three weeks after the end of the European Championships in Zagreb, the qualification phase for the Summer Games ends with the title fights in Abu Dhabi starting on Sunday. And that with a showdown: former world champion Anna-Maria Wagner or the two-time European champion Alina Böhm – only one is allowed to go to Paris.

“This is a sad situation, we would both be medal candidates at the Olympics,” Böhm told the SID. Unlike the World Cup, there is only a maximum of one starting place per nation at the Summer Games. In the class up to 78 kg, Wagner, who will be third at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, is currently in the lead as third in the decisive world rankings, while Böhm is fifth. At the European Championships, 27-year-old Wagner won silver, Böhm (25) won bronze.
German judoka are also fighting in other classes not just for medals, but for the Olympic starting place. Pauline Starke and Seija Ballhaus (57 kg), Miriam Butkereit and Giovanna Scoccimarro (both 70 kg) as well as Erik Abramov and Losseni Kone (over 100 kg) are each eligible for a Paris start via the world rankings, but have to assert themselves nationally.
Eduard Trippel (90 kg), who surprisingly won silver in Tokyo in 2021, only has a moderate chance of starting at the Olympics. The Rüsselsheimer would probably have to get a medal to make it to Paris.

At the 2023 World Cup in Doha, Scoccimarro won silver, the only German medal. The last German World Cup gold so far came from Wagner in Budapest in 2021.
