Kooij had already shown his fast legs several times in the 1st week, with a 4th, 6th and 9th place, which also put him in the top 3 of the points classification.
But his sprint victory in Naples will not be repeated this Giro. Visma-Lease a Bike, Kooij’s team, announced on Tuesday that the Dutchman fell ill on the rest day.
“The Giro is a rollercoaster of emotions. Olav developed a fever on the rest day and cannot continue,” the team said.
