From Botafogo to Molenbeek: The Unusual Coaching Journey of Claudio Caçapa

Dismissed in February after a heavy defeat against Antwerp, Claudio Caçapa never really spoke about his rather unusual adventure at RWDM. Invited on the RMC set to participate in the After Foot show, he looked back on his incredible arrival in Molenbeek and the few previous days which saw him go from Botafogo to Molenbeek while passing through Lyon. “It’s not easy,” he begins. I was on vacation in Brazil, I had five days of vacation left. I receive a call from Vincent Ponsot who tells me that I have to go to Botafogo. John wanted me to go help out there because the coach had left. So I go to Botafogo, I play four matches and 15 days later, I arrive in Lyon as assistant to Laurent Blanc. Two days later, Textor came to see me and said, ‘you are going to Molenbeek’. I tell him that I have just arrived in Lyon, that the best thing is for me to stay there. He told me that I was the man for the job. As I had within me the desire to coach, I told myself that this was the opportunity I was waiting for and three days after my arrival in Lyon, I packed my bags for Molenbeek.”

Claudio Caçapa therefore arrives at RWDM in the wake of the dismissal of Vincent Euvrard and his staff, while the championship begins four days later… “I arrived four days before the start of the championship. And against Bruges (Editor’s note: it was Genk) where we took 0-4 at home. I had just arrived, I didn’t know anyone and what’s more it was Bruges (Editor’s note: Genk). It was not easy.”

The former RWDM coach also gave his opinion on John Textor, owner of RWDM, Botafogo, Lyon and shareholder at Crystal Palace. “John, I don’t know how he does it. I saw him in Lyon, I met him in Rio and I saw him again in Molenbeek, in Belgium. I think there must be two or three John Textors (laughs). Afterwards, he has people around him that he trusts and when you have competent people, that’s the most important thing, that you can trust, it can work.”
