Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard Claims First ATP Title in Dream Week Lyon

A dream week in Lyon for Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The 117th player in the world won his first title on the ATP circuit on Saturday May 25 after his victory at the Lyon tournament (ATP 250) against the Argentinian Tomas Etcheverry (29th) in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 7 -6 (9/7).

On the eve of the start of Roland-Garros, the 20-year-old native of Lyon, who benefited from an invitation, took the better after a fight of almost 2 hours 30 minutes over the number 6 seed of the tournament, during a breathtaking end to the match.

He succeeds another French hopeful, Arthur Fils, who won in 2023 against another Argentinian, Francisco Cerundolo. Again, it was the first title on the main circuit for Fils, who has since entered the Top 50 (he is currently 30th).

Mpetshi Perricard is not there yet but he has reached an important milestone, in style: after a bad start, receiving a break, he took the opponent’s serve twice, to win the first set 6-4 in 49 minutes . He then had a big air gap in the second set, losing 6-1. But the best was to come: a decisive set, with a knife, during which he held his throw without trembling, up to 5-5.

After an interminable eleventh game, he then took his opponent’s serve before being caught up in the stakes when serving for the match, Etcheverry managing to break. In the deciding game, the two players went blow for blow, and it was ultimately on opposing service that Perricard managed to win, 9 points to 7.

A good omen as he will face the Belgian David Goffin (115th) in the first round of Roland-Garros. Porte d’Auteuil, the Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry will meet another Frenchman, Arthur Cazaux (77th).
