The two French women entered in -70 kg managed to reach the final. Madeleine Malonga and Audrey Tcheuméo are still in the running for a bronze medal in the -78 kg, while Maxime-Gael Ngayap Hambou and Alexis Mathieu were eliminated in the men’s -90 kg.
The French women were quick to qualify for the final and compete for the title in -70 kg. Marie-Ève Gahié eliminated the Belgian Gabriella Willems after a fight lasting less than 1’30”. Margaux Pinot, after a complicated quarter-final where she had to fight for almost three minutes in the golden score, qualified after 18 seconds against the Greek Elisavet Teltsidou.
Surprised in the semi-finals by the Italian Alice Bellandi, Madeleine Malonga maintains her chances of a medal. She will face the South Korean Jeongyun Lee, while Audrey Tcheuméo, beaten in the quarter-finals, won her repechage fight and will face the British Emma Reid for the bronze medal.
Among the men, the Olympic selection Maxime-Gael Ngayap Hambou was soundly beaten on ippon in the round of 16 by the Spaniard Tristani Mosakhlishvili. Alexis Mathieu failed in the next round against the Cuban Ivan Felipe Silva Morales.
