French Badminton Shines Bright with Seven Athletes Set for Paris Olympics

French badminton will have at least seven athletes at the next Paris Olympic Games. With good chances of medals.

Will French badminton come into the spotlight at the Paris Games? It’s still too early to tell. In the meantime, discipline did the job. For the first time since the sport’s entry into the Olympic program in 1992, French badminton will be represented in all 5 tables: 3 men and 4 players are guaranteed to be part of the celebration this summer after the historic harvest (2 gold medals). gold and one silver) during the last European Championships.

In women’s singles, Qi Xuefei (Bad’Club de Rostrenen) is participating in her second Olympic campaign after that in Tokyo. The adopted Breton was the most consistent in being the French representative. In the men’s singles, Toma Junior Popov (Badminton Club Fos) is the lucky winner. Fighting with his brother, the eldest won his place at the European Championships by qualifying for the final after beating the reigning Olympic champion: Viktor Axelsen.

Great first for men’s doubles

In men’s doubles, the Popov brothers – Toma Junior and Christo (Badminton Club Fos) – are ultimately the French qualifiers. This is the first time that France will have a pair represented in this table at the Games. Anne Tran (Racing Club de France) and Margot Lambert (Red Star Mulhouse), 2024 European Champions, are also expected on the Parisian courts this summer. The first Europeans to qualify, they are now 17th in the world. On the mixed side, Delphine Delrue (BC Chambly Oise) / Thom Gicquel (Red Star Mulhouse) – for their second Olympic meeting – are keen to claim their first European title on the courts of the Porte de la Chapelle arena.

The FFBaD hopes to see this official selection enriched soon and continues to mobilize with the various authorities to obtain the qualification of the second male pair Lucas Corvée/Ronan Labar following the modification of the ranking made by the BWF. Less than 4 months before the start of the Paris 2024 badminton events, the latter – without prior consultation – made a late modification of the rankings following a calculation error dating back to May 2023 with very serious consequences. As a reminder, the FFBaD, in a communication dated April 24, requested the exceptional qualification of Lucas Corvée and Ronan Labar for the Paris 2024 Games in the men’s doubles table, in addition to that of the first qualified pair, on behalf of sporting fairness and the values of Olympism.
