Great sadness at the Los Angeles Lakers: The NBA club mourns the loss of its former playmaker Darius Morris, who died at the age of 33 in his hometown of Los Angeles.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, Darius Aaron Morris,” the former NBA player’s family said in a statement. “During this transition period, his family asks that their wishes for privacy be respected.”

Morris an 41. Sets drafted

Morris already stood out in his college career. After a strong high school basketball career in Los Angeles, Morris was a leading player at the University of Michigan. He broke the Wolverines’ record for most assists in a single season with 235. A few years later, the record was broken by Trey Burke.

The Lakers drafted the talent 41st overall in the 2011 draft. For the Californians, he played alongside basketball legend Kobe Bryant for the first two seasons. In 2013, Morris moved to the Philadelphia 76ers. He was subsequently traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets. In 2015 he ended his NBA career and tried his luck abroad. There he played for clubs from China, Russia and France.
