Football: VfL Wolfsburg wins the DFB Cup for the tenth time in a row

The VfL Wolfsburg footballers have won the DFB Cup again. Jule Brand (14th minute) and Dominique Janssen (40th) scored for VfL in the 2-0 (2-0) win against FC Bayern Munich in Cologne.

The Wolves have been undefeated in the competition for 50 games: no other team has won the DFB Women’s Cup since 2015. Overall they won their eleventh title. At the same time, the team from Lower Saxony prevented a possible double for the already established German champions from Munich in front of a good 45,000 spectators in Cologne.

Jule Brand scores the first goal in the 14th minute

The first goal for VfL coach Tommy Stroot’s team came in the opening quarter of an hour. Brand took a powerful shot from 17 meters and the ball landed just in front of Bayern’s goalkeeper Mala Grohs, who reached into space and therefore looked unfortunate. Meanwhile, the Munich team found it difficult to get into the game, with only Wolfsburg having any big chances in the first half. Janssen’s 2-0 header after a corner taken by former national player Svenja Huth before the break was therefore well deserved (40th minute).

The Bayern fans only saw their team’s first great chance after just under an hour when Lea Schüller was denied by her national team colleague Merle Frohms, who reacted strongly after Klara Bühl’s corner. Bühl’s low shot that followed a little later also deflected it towards the corner.

Despite an improved performance in the second half, the Munich team still lacked the means in the final phase to threaten the Wolfsburg team, who were now more defensively positioned. VfL hardly did anything offensively, but success was no longer in danger.

“Now Cologne is being torn apart”

“This is an extremely big relief,” said VfL captain Alexandra Popp on ZDF. “We didn’t have a good season, but what the team brought to the pitch here was VfL Wolfsburg, that was the DFB Cup, and that is the title. Now Cologne is being torn apart, there is extreme celebration, that We deserve it.”

Bayern’s Klara Bühl said: “The disappointment is huge, we imagined it all differently. But we slept through the first half and were always a step too late. You can’t survive like that.”

Federal Interior and Sports Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) congratulated the winners and praised the development in women’s football. “Respect for this achievement,” said Faeser. “I was particularly pleased that the women’s final was sold out for the second time after last year. This not only contributed to a great atmosphere, but clearly shows that women’s football is getting more and more the attention it deserves. That is important to me.”
