According to reports, a crucial phone call took place on Wednesday between the 59-year-old and Barca’s sporting director Deco. Details such as the contract term have yet to be clarified. A one-year contract with an option for an extension is being discussed.

Several media outlets had previously reported that Flick was once again a hot candidate for the top Spanish club. Flick, most recently the German team boss, is considered the club management’s favorite. However, it was recently unclear whether there would be a separation from current coach Xavi after an unprecedented back and forth in recent weeks. The departure has not yet been officially confirmed. According to the newspaper, Xavi will also be informed of the decision on Monday.

Withdrawal from withdrawal

Barcelona’s club legend announced his resignation after the end of this season in January. Even then, Flick was being considered as a possible successor. The first turnaround followed in April, when Xavi, President Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco agreed to continue working together until at least 2025.

However, the 44-year-old 2010 world champion is now apparently facing ousting again because Xavi’s public statements about the club’s financial situation and the lack of international competitiveness of his squad are said to have seriously angered the Barca management.

One thing that speaks in Flick’s favor as a potential successor is that his agent Pini Zahavi has a good relationship with Laporta. He also has a good reputation in Spain because, as coach of Bayern Munich, he beat FC Barcelona 8-2 in the quarterfinals on the way to winning the Champions League in 2020.
