Al Hilal claimed their fourth Saudi Pro League title in five years, once again denying Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo of Al Nassr a chance to win the trophy. Al Hilal, who signed Neymar last summer but have been without the injured Brazilian since October, won 4-1 over Al-Hazem.
Still unbeaten in 31 league games, Al Hilal now have a 12-point lead over Al Nassr with three rounds to go. For CR7 it is the second season in Saudi Arabia without winning the championship.
After the Portuguese’s sensational move to the kingdom, other big names in football signed major contracts with several clubs in the country, including Neymar, Karim Benzema, Sadio Mané, N’Golo Kanté and Riyad Mahrez. Members of the Saudi “Big Four” – Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad, Benzema’s club, and Al Ahli, Mahrez’s team – all belong to the Public Investment Fund (PIF), a sovereign wealth fund that is working to diversify the Saudi economy. Al Hilal and Al Nassr will meet again in the Copa del Rey final on 31 May.
