Filip Misolic Makes History at French Open: Qualifies for Grand Slam Main Draw

Game, set, match – Filip Misolic is in a Grand Slam main draw for the first time at the French Open!

The Styrian defeated the Frenchman Quentin Halys in the third and final qualifying round in Paris after being a set behind with 2:6, 6:4 and 6:3 and can celebrate.

The match does not start as planned for the Austrian, however, and he has to give up his second serve. Although he has the chance to break back to 2:2 immediately afterwards, he cannot take advantage of it and also loses his next serve – 1:4 for the Frenchman.

Halys doesn’t let the set be taken away and gives Misolic one more game before he scores 6:2 on his own serve and thus wins the set.

In the second set, the match becomes more balanced. The Austrian is now playing much better and is able to work his way to a 4:1 lead. At the end of the set, however, he lets Halys come back, so that the score is only 5:4. But Misolic keeps his nerve and takes another break to make it 6:4 and equalize at 1:1 in sets.

In the all-important third set, the 22-year-old made a brilliant start and took a 3-0 lead over Schwartzman’s conqueror. He then let his opponent serve, but Misolic consistently and confidently got his own serve through, so that the final score was 5-2.

When Haly serves, the Austrian already has a match point, but cannot capitalize on it. The Frenchman is able to reduce the score to 3:5.

Afterwards, the Styrian made everything clear, winning the third set 6:3 and was able to celebrate his entry into the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career.

Alcaraz possible opponent

The 2022 Kitzbühel finalist will find out his first-round opponent a little later after the qualifiers have been drawn. Possible opponents include Carlos Alcaraz (ESP-3) or Hubert Hurkacz (POL-8).

This means that there are two Austrians in the singles main draw: Austria’s number 1, Sebastian Ofner, who will face Frenchman Terence Atmane in the first round of the second major of the year, which begins on Sunday. The red-white-red team is not represented in the women’s field.
