FIFA’s Arsène Wenger Proposes New Offside Rule to Benefit Attacking Teams

Arsène Wenger, former Arsenal coach and head of Global Football Development at FIFA, decided to move forward with the new offside rule, marking the infraction only if his body is completely in front of the defender, which would benefit the attacking team. The entity is interested in making the game adopt the change as soon as possible.

The former coach presented the change proposal to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), responsible for football rules, which approved the idea at the beginning of the year.

FIFA’s new procedure does not change the reference for the defender’s offside line, the line continues to be drawn on the part of the body that is closest to the goal. The difference lies in the attacking players, who would benefit and increase the recurrence of goals.

There were some concerns that the change would cause too much of a tactical change and give too much of an advantage to the attackers. However, according to the English newspaper ‘The Times’, it is understood that Wenger was convinced by the results of tests in Sweden, Italy and the Netherlands.
