Festive Splash of Color at Piazza Matteotti: Jr. NBA FIP Schools League Finals Kick Off in Città di Castello

The festive splash of color that invaded Piazza Matteotti is the scene that raised the curtain on Final Event della Jr. NBA FIP Schools Leaguethe championship organized by the Italian Basketball Federation and the National Basketball Association and dedicated to middle school students.

The central square of Città di Castello welcomed the 16 schools/franchises from all over Italy, who arrived in Umbria to compete for the Ring of the sixth edition of the school tournament. The almost two hundred very young basketball players, before facing each other on the three courts of the Altotevere area, all gathered together for the Opening Ceremony of the event, which was attended by the Mayor of Città di Castello Luca Secondithe Sports Councilor of Città di Castello Riccardo Carlettithe President of the FIP Umbria Regional Committee Gianni Antonellithe FIP School Sector Manager Giacomo Galanda, and NBA Ambassador Mery Andrade.

“Passion for the game is what drives you to give your best – Mery Andrade, current assistant of the Toronto Raptors and former WNBA player and also of Napoli Vomero, Reyer Venezia and Dike Napoli, Le Mura Lucca and Pool Comense, told the teams – both when things are going well and when you have bad moments. For me, Italy is a home, and it is an honor to be here as an NBA Ambassador for this wonderful event.”

Former Azzurro Galanda echoes her: “Respect for the rules, for your teammates, for the coaches, for your opponents, must be the basis of your experience. Today, and for all the times you take the field. The Jr. NBA project becomes more and more important every year, due to the number of children involved and the attention it has in planning school activities. To you players who have arrived here, I congratulate you. It wasn’t trivial, because you won the city tournaments. Now your task is to go onto the field and play to the best of your ability, it is the only way you can repay the work done by all the people who contributed to the organization of this event. May the best win!”.

Once the ceremony was over, the 16 teams poured onto the three playing fields of Città di Castello. From the formula The event formula involves the division of the teams into 4 groups of 4 teams each. The NBA schools/franchises competed on the first day to reach the highest position in the rankings.

Tomorrow, May 25th, the second day, with the finals for the assignment of positions from sixteenth to first.
The 2024 Jr. NBA FIP Schools League Champions will be presented with Jr. NBA Rings.
