Feliciano Lopez, director of the Masters 1000 in Madrid: “We can expect the impossible with Nadal”

“As director of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, you presented a trophy to Rafael Nadal to celebrate the final match of his career at the Caja Magica on Tuesday. What do you remember from this evening?
It was a very special moment. We knew it would happen one day, but when the day comes, it remains difficult and emotional. We were very happy that he played in Madrid. This was far from certain just a few weeks ago. I’m happy that he was able to play four matches and that he has progressed since Barcelona. Between his loss to De Minaur there and Tuesday, he improved in a lot of areas. He will still have a chance to measure himself against the best in Rome. I think he will be in good shape at Roland Garros. It was a magical night, very moving. We wanted to prepare something special for him, but Tuesday’s match was not the last of his career. So we wanted him to be comfortable with our tribute. In any case, it came from the bottom of our hearts. He appreciated it, his family too. That was the most important thing.
