FC St. Pauli Still Believes in Bundesliga Promotion Despite Derby Defeat

The first promotion match point has been taken, but the belief in FC St. Pauli’s return to the Bundesliga remains unbroken. “The focus is on working through this. It’s positive that we still have two games in hand to decide,” said coach Fabian Hürzeler after the bitter 0-1 defeat in the highly emotional city derby of the 2nd Bundesliga at Hamburger SV.

You could “definitely get something out of the deserved defeat,” said the 31-year-old: “What, that depends on the players. We are of course disappointed and will analyze why we were so discouraged at times. That’s me from my team not used to it.”

Marcel Hartel also quickly looked ahead. The home game against bottom-placed VfL Osnabrück presents the next big opportunity. “We have to have a good week of training and then play a different game at home with the fans behind us,” said the Kiezkicker’s top striker, who are four points ahead of Fortuna Düsseldorf in the relegation spot in the table with two game days to go.

For St. Pauli it would be the fifth promotion to Germany’s top division, 13 years after their last relegation.
