“1. FC Köln will start the 2024/25 season with new managers in the coaching team. After a comprehensive joint analysis of the past season, the FC and its current head coach Timo Schultz have mutually agreed not to extend the expiring employment contract,” said a press release from the club on Monday. The players were informed of the decision via video conference. A successor is to be presented by the start of preparations.

“We deliberately took a lot of time last week to work through the second half of the season together with Timo and to turn over every stone. As a result, we were of the unanimous opinion that we need to start the second division season, which will bring with it major challenges, with new impulses in the coaching team,” says managing director Christian Keller.

Schultz had only taken over Cologne at the beginning of the year and was unable to turn things around. Under his leadership, the team only managed three wins, eight draws and seven defeats.

Schultz: “Consistent and correct”

“Since we have not achieved our main goal – staying in the league – I am of the opinion that it is consistent and right that someone else starts a new beginning,” the 46-year-old is quoted as saying in the FC’s press release.

The two assistant coaches André Pawlak and Kevin McKenna will also be leaving the club. Pawlak had previously asked for his contract, which runs until 2025, to be terminated because he wanted to take on new professional challenges. McKenna’s contract is expiring anyway and will not be renewed.

“Under changing head coaches, they were always loyal, reliable colleagues at a high professional level. We wish them both the best possible success in their futures, both personally and professionally,” Keller commented on the personnel changes. This means that the FC will have to completely reorganize its coaching team in the 2nd division.

First training on June 24

The players are expected back for performance diagnostics from June 21 to 23. Official training begins on Monday, June 24. The first match day in the 2nd Bundesliga will take place from August 2 to 4.
